We're definitely launching a 'Heritage Cafe' on Saturday 5th March, in the Methodist Chapel & Community Centre from 10am-noon.

Come along for a chat, a cuppa and a slice of cake.

Open every Saturday throughout 2022.

About Us

We're a local history group who have collected and archived many maps, photos and sketches of our village. We continue to meet and talk to people who may have connections to the parish and who like to share their memories.

We're keen to add to our material and would appreciate the opportunity of scanning any photos you may have.

We have a Newton facebook page, a Newton Parish Council website and a new information board, sited on the wall of the village Chapel & Community Centre.

We always welcome new members so if you're interested in joining us, please contact any one of our group: Lynn Hill (2, Sunnycroft), Margaret Horsley (Wold Grange), Hugh & Alison Mannerings (Westfield House), Ann Williams, (Appletree House), Christina Young (The Poplars) or email Margaret on margaret.horsley@hotmail.co.uk for further information.

History

This heading takes you through the many ages of Newton's history from pre-historic to the present day.

There's also a timeline that we've created using newspaper articles and material from local archives.

Topics

This heading introduces you to the occupations of the villagers particularly those connected to farming.

Religion, commerce, education and transport are some of the many topics covered too.

Newton Facebook.

Throughout lockdown, Margaret wrote daily posts on Newton Facebook page. The titles of the posts included an 'A to Z of Newton', '50 shades of Newton' and a 'Who's Who...past & present.'

The feed back from these posts was very positive, leading to more than 500 followers.

For those not 'on' facebook, the posts are repeated here.

ouse.

Here's the Jacques family, gathered outside Derwent House, circa 1910.  They affectionately called it 'Monkey Tree House'.

Fred and his wife Fanny had 13 children. Their twins, Stanley and William died at birth in 1900.

Fanny died in 1903.

Leaflets

Every household has received a leaflet and a 'calling' card, introducing the History group and inviting residents to join us.

We've had some very complimentary comments about the leaflet content.

Folks have been reminded that extra copies can be obtained, especially for friends and families or visitors to holiday lets.

A perspex holder.

Leaflets will be available from several perspex holders around the village. Visitors are encouraged to take a copy home with them.

Posters on sale.

So many folks enquired about 'framing' the village interpretation board image and leaflet that we ordered 100

posters @ £5 each.

Please contact margaret.horsley@hotmail.co.uk

to place your order.

They'll make special Christmas presents for friends and family.

Parish Councillors put the YWT information board in situ on the Ings.

Latest Project

Our latest project has been sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund and involved creating a large interpretation board of the village which now hangs very prominently on the Chapel wall, in the centre of the village.

We've also designed and had printed 2,000 leaflets to complement the board.

Both projects were developed by Colour Heroes of Easingwold.
