1853
In 1853, with the Vaccination Act dated 1st August, all children born after that date are to receive a compulsory vaccination against smallpox.
Fry's produced their Cream Stick...a predescessor to 'Fry's Cream bar'...the first mass produced chocolate bar.

The first nursing school based on the ideas of Florence Nightingale, is opened at St Thomas' Hospital in London.
The Food and Drink Act, 1860, prohibits the adulteration of certain foodstuffs. Cheese was coloured with lead and locally-grown chicory was roasted and added to coffee.
